Permanent Exhibits

Many layers of history are present at America's Stonehenge. The permanent exhibits in the Visitor Center and on the property offer insights into Salem, New Hampshire's remarkable past.

The Artifact Room

Ancient artifacts spanning more than 4,000 years of human history are housed inside the Visitor Center. This exhibit features a variety of lithic tools, early Native American pottery, jewelry, and stone inscriptions found on this site and in the local area. Descriptions of the artifacts as well as their cultural significance in the past and today are displayed.

Modern Archaeology

Information about modern archaeological techniques and research is sprinkled throughout the museum, but concentrated around this recreated dig site. Real archaeological equipment is on display in this exhibit for visitors to see not only the results of ongoing research at this site, but the process as well. A short film includes discussion from research staff.

American History Exhibit

While America's Stonehenge is well-known for its precolonial history, the Pattee Family and their neighbors had a significant impact on this property during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their artifacts are showcased in this exhibit, which includes their colonial and Revolutionary history, as well as their involvement with abolition and the Underground Railroad.

The Site

A trip to America's Stonehenge would not be complete without visiting the main attraction. This 100-acre outdoor site is full of ancient and historic structures spanning the periods covered in the museum's exhibits. A paper map and audio tour of the site provide interpretation of the stone structures, their historical significance, and the surrounding  landscape.
