Accessibility and Weather

America's Stonehenge is open to most ages and abilities. The wooded trail to the site is approximately 1/2 mile in total, and takes about an hour to complete. The trail is steadily sloping with uneven terrain and is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or difficulty walking.

Field Trips spend the majority of their time outdoors. Please come prepared for the day's weather and advise that students wear appropriate clothing.

On-site parking is available for large vehicles, including buses and vans

Check-in:

Payment can be made via invoice or on arrival by credit card, business check, or cash.

Typical Field Trip Schedule

Arrival

America's Stonehenge opens at 9:00 am. Field trips are encouraged to arrive early in the day to allow plenty of time to participate in scheduled activities. Field trips usually last 3 to 4 hours.

On arrival, please send one teacher or chaperone into the visitor center to check in and complete payment if necessary. For larger groups, please divide into two classes - one will tour the site first while the other class digs, and the groups will switch activities when they are finished.

Welcome and Instructions

Our museum staff will greet the students and cover a few important rules.

  • Students must stay with teachers/chaperones at all times

  • Walking only (no running) through the site

  • Do not damage the site (no climbing on structures or moving stones)

These rules will help everyone to stay safe during their visit, help us preserve the historic site, and make sure that students have an educational field trip.

Following these instructions, museum staff will guide the groups to their respective activities on the trail or in the dig pit.

Tour

Touring the historic site takes between 60 and 90 minutes. For larger classes, we recommend dividing into two smaller groups as some sections of the site can get crowded. Museum staff will introduce the tour to the students and explain how the trail system works. Staff will also be present on the Main Site to help direct groups through the tour and answer questions.

Specific sections of the site are numbered and lettered, which will match the materials your class has chosen to follow. Each stop will have information about the structure and its historical significance that students are encouraged to listen to while they observe and explore.

Lunch

Schools are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch to eat between activities. After completing their first activity, students are usually ready for a break and a chance to use the restrooms. This will allow our staff time to reset our materials for the tour and dig pit.

During lunch, students are permitted to make purchases in the museum gift shop. Please send students in small groups that are supervised by a chaperone.

Dig Pit

After lunch, students will switch activities. The dig pit offers a hands-on learning experience and an introduction to real field archaeology. Museum staff will provide a brief lesson on artifacts, archaeology, and proper digging techniques. Real archaeological equipment (trowels, buckets, and sifters) will be provided for students to use in the dig pit.

While digging, students will uncover replica artifacts (which they are asked to turn in at the end of the activity) as well as polished gemstones that they are allowed to keep! This little incentive encourages participation and promotes a fun learning environment.
