Q. What is the difference between an alpaca
and a llama?
A. Alpacas are about 1/3 the size of llamas. Alpaca fiber is much softer
and more highly valued than llama fiber. Alpacas are generally more
even-tempered than llamas and are easier to keep as pets. Alpacas are
most valued for their fiber quality, while llamas are mainly bred as
pack animals.
Q. Do you have to shear alpacas?
A. Yes. We shear our alpacas once a year in late May or early June when
the weather starts to warm up, and by the fall they grow nice thick
coats to keep them warm through the winter.
Q. What do alpacas eat?
A. Our alpacas eat a mixture of hay and grain; they have hay to snack on
throughout the day, and we feed them grain in the morning and afternoon.
Q. Do alpacas spit?
A. Alpacas normally only spit when they feel threatened, or around
feeding time.
Q. Are alpacas friendly?
A. Yes, however alpacas are livestock and do not normally enjoy being
handled often.
Q. How long do alpacas live?
A. The average lifespan of an alpaca is 15 to 20 years.
