Alpaca Tracks was established in 2002. I started off with
three male alpacas. I now have four male alpacas and four female alpacas. I got
into the alpaca business as a project for school and instantly fell in love with
these friendly animals. The more I learned about alpacas the more interested I
became. Most people don't know what alpacas are and usually confuse them with
llamas. When I started researching the world of alpacas I was surprised at the
amount of information available and how helpful the farms and owners were.
Surprisingly, there are
more than 50,000 alpacas in the United States. Alpacas are indigenous to South
America in places like Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador. The first alpacas were
brought into the United States in 1984 (although there is evidence of camelids
in North America prior to the last ice age-10,000 years ago). Alpacas are no
longer allowed to be imported into the United States. Since alpacas are no
longer allowed to be imported from other countries, the only way to get an
alpaca is from a breeder or farm within the United States. Alpacas are most
prized for their fleece which is of a higher quality than cashmere. To learn
